A meeting between place and memory

This painting was commissioned by Rijnbrink and Gemeente Losser for the art project Vaste Grond (Firm Ground). It is part of a group exhibition focusing on local history and identity.

The work depicts two women at the Bleekwachtershuisje, a historic building from 1774. It was once home to the watchman who supervised the bleached linen of the home weavers. When home weaving disappeared and the textile industry emerged, the place gained new meaning. Women from Losser took it over. They rinsed and bleached their laundry there.

What at first glance seems an everyday scene, carries a deeper layer of care, community, and continuity.
