Sewan Bakvis creates figurative paintings in which the female presence acts as a bearer of memory and identity.
Artistic practice
Sewan Bakvis is a Dutch-Armenian artist whose work explores identity, memory, and the tension between holding on and letting go. Her paintings center around the human figure, not as a representation, but as a presence that carries what often remains unspoken.
Through subtle distortions, layered surfaces, and a subdued, tonal color palette, she creates spaces where the visible and the invisible meet.
Growing up between cultures influences her visual language. Themes such as displacement, belonging, and inner transformation recur in her work, not as narratives, but as states of mind. Instead of offering clear answers, her work invites a slower way of looking where meaning unfolds over time and what remains is often that which cannot be fully explained.
Her work has been exhibited in China, and in the Netherlands, including through Kunst Punt Almelo.
